Giving the best to ones child is the most pressing desire of each and every parent. At times however, one may land up with a school that does not offer any extracurricular activities. Though there is some merit in having a professionally trained person guide and oversee the activities of the children, after school the parent can also develop activities. In fact at times the parent is a better judge at what kind of exposure is correct for the child.
There is a special role that a parent can play in the overall academic, physical and social development of a child. Here are some tips on what activities to give importance to and options for various other activities that a child may be interested in.
Needless to say the school and the assignments should take precedence over any other fun-filled or special interest activities. The best way to emphasize the importance of these to your child is to ensure that the days’ quota of reading, writing and assignments is over before other activities start. If while doing so, you discover that your child has a special interest in a specific academic area like robots or space or animals, don’t shy away from aiding the process of discovery and exploration. With the Internet abound with information encourage your child to learn more and share with you the discoveries. You shall be surprised with the wealth of knowledge that your little baby will emerge with.
Social development can be given an impetus by promoting ideas on clubs. These could be reading clubs, library clubs, debate clubs and the like. These can allow your child to participate in story reading sessions and can instill a sense of sharing and being together. Some clubs can also be formed with the purpose of community service in mind and could take on tasks like ‘clean-the-city’ drives. Social programs can also give your child her first experience in charity, community service and suffering. Volunteering for such programs will enable her to have a sense of achievement.
If you would like to further your child in the pursuit of sports and physical activities, then you could consider enrolling your young tyke in a sports club. Dancing is another form of physical activity that allows for a release of all the energy that is pent up among the kids. The gym can also be a good source of release.
Another option is to involve your child in household activities like cooking, cleaning, watering the plants etc. This will give you a helping hand and at the same time will infuse a familial bonding among the family members.
From the above it is obvious that the need for a school that ahs extracurricular activities after school is not an all-pervading requirement. Rather the absence of the same allows you to get more involved in the all round development of you child.

Computers have fast become an integral part of our lives and times have changed since we were kids and did not even know of the existence of this wonder machine while at school. Computers have become such a significant part of our daily lives that it is impossible to conceive a life without the PC or the Mac.
In such an environment it is imperative that our children do not face the same problems that we had to face while grappling with this new invention. I had crossed fifty years of age when I bought my first computer. I was hopelessly ignorant about it. It was simply a wonder machine as far as I was concerned and was oblivious of its capability and versatility in creating, managing and storing documents and accounts and sourcing information from the Internet. I was the unlucky one and learnt all that I now know, the hard way and through the hit and trial method. And believe me it is not even 1% of what one should know about computers.
Children are nowadays taught computers in school starting from first grade and. it is astonishing to note how much they know so early in life. Words like PC and MAC and hard disk that were all Greek to us are part of their normal vocabulary.
To augment the knowledge that they acquire at school they need to be encouraged to spend quality time on computers at home too. There is a vast storehouse of knowledge waiting for them on the Net. There are sites that teach kids and novices, step by step, the basics of computers and use of the Internet. New software is so user friendly that all it requires is a click of the computer mouse to enter the web and unlock the doors that lead to all the information that your kid needs to learn about computers.
However it is obligatory on the part of the parents to make them aware of the dangers that are hanging around and to teach them to stay away from disgusting sites that abound the Net. With vultures in the shape of obnoxious sites waiting to pound upon impressionable young minds you need to teach your children how to be circumspect while roaming through the abysmal abyss that the Net has now become.
All said and done, it is a bounden duty of the parents to learn more about computers and at the same time encourage their children to gain as much knowledge as they can.

Writing a book report sounds fairly simple till the time you are actually expected to do one at school by your teacher. The start is fairly simple – read the book which needs to be reviewed. But after that what is one supposed to do? Confusion, bewilderment and inertia sets in and you start to wonder whether you will ever be able to accomplish this task which you set out to do. Rather than grounded yourself to a halt or raving in desperation at the impending deadline for your submission look for templates and examples.
Ask other people who have done book reports as to how they had proceeded after reading the book. You could ask your teacher or mentor, your parents or elder siblings or a friend. You could probably ask the librarian since she is sure to have done a book report at some time in her life.
There are numerous boos which explain in detail about how book reports should be tackled and approached. One such book that you might want to refer to is ‘How to write Terrific Book Reports b Elizabeth James’. This Student Survival Guide explains what a book report is and the main definitions and descriptions required. It also includes lessons on how to choose a book for reviewing, how to use the library and also how to read the book and what to notice while doing so. It also provides sample book reports as a test case.
Another such book is How to Write Book Reports by Dawn B. Sova and Harry Teitelbaum. This book is similar to that by James but also includes the difference between reports and reviews and how to take notes for writing a book report.
Though the Internet is an excellent platform for all information, to write your report learn from the gurus and choose the site from which you judiciously. Only refer to sites which are likely to be genuine and effective. It is important to do so since there may be many sites which may be a sham and provide fake information. Some of the sites which you might find useful are TeensPoint.org, TeenInk.com (which has more than 600 book reviews), and NancyMatson.com (which along with reviews offers a recommended book of the month).
You may choose any or all of the sources to refer to for your book review but the fun is in writing your own report and verbalizing your options and perceptions rather than copying it from someone else.
